Introduction

The University of Washington is an accredited, top-ranked public university located in Seattle. The UW offers students a wide variety of programs, services and opportunities to learn and grow. We welcome international students to apply!

Be 18 years of age or older when you apply.

You must be 18 years of age or older when you apply. If you are under 18, you will need to provide the following:

  • A copy of your birth certificate with an English translation if applicable
  • Any other legal documentation that proves your identity (e.g., passport)

Have a high school diploma or equivalent.

This means you have a high school diploma or an equivalent, such as a GED. The minimum requirement for admission is 15 college credits. If you don’t meet this requirement, you can apply for our Freshman Reading and Composition Program (FRCP). You must also have completed 2 years of English in high school with a grade C or better, or demonstrate through another standardized test that your English skills are at the college level.

We accept official transcripts from every college and university attended since graduating from high school, including those outside of Washington State. Your application will be reviewed by our Admissions Office once all required materials have been received; however it’s best to submit everything early so we know what documents they still need before making final decisions on admissions offers this fall!

Meet the English language proficiency requirement.

If you’re an international student who wants to study at the University of Washington, you must meet our English language proficiency requirement. This means that your test scores must be at least 100 points higher than the minimum required score for your application type and major.

If you are applying as a graduate student or if you want to change your major or are interested in transferring credits:

  • Graduate students must also submit GRE scores
  • Professional school students (law, medicine) must submit LSAT or MCAT scores

If you have already taken the TOEFL, IELTS or other test and want to know your scores, you can use our free score estimator.

Complete the application for admission and pay the non-refundable $50 application fee.

Once you’ve completed the application for admission and paid the $50 non-refundable fee, you will be able to view your UW application status online. The next step is to submit all required documents.

You may submit an official transcript from each college or university attended (except for those applicants who have already earned a bachelor’s degree). If you are applying as a freshman, official transcripts must be sent directly from each institution to our office no later than July 1st. International students whose native language is not English are also required to submit TOEFL scores from within two years of submitting their applications and must meet minimum scores set by UW-Washinton: 79 iBT (internet based test) with 20 speaking and listening sections; 550 paper-based test with 4 writing sections; or 79 computer adaptive test (CAT); 590 computer adaptive test (CAT).

If you have not yet taken the TOEFL, we suggest that you do so before submitting your application. The TOEFL may be waived for students with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, and who are graduating from a U.S.-accredited high school or university in which all instruction is in English. To request a waiver, please contact our office at (608) 263-3147 or by email at [email protected]
